{"id":18431,"date":"2025-11-05T09:55:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T08:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tcs-engineering.de\/ev-high-voltage-vs-high-current-whats-the-difference\/"},"modified":"2026-08-28T16:26:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T14:26:13","slug":"ev-high-voltage-vs-high-current-whats-the-difference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tcs-engineering.de\/en\/ev-high-voltage-vs-high-current-whats-the-difference\/","title":{"rendered":"(ev) high voltage vs. High Current: What&#8217;s the Difference?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 fusion-flex-container nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"max-width:1352px;margin-left: calc(-4% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>These days, even lay persons are hearing the term <strong>\u201c(ev) high voltage\u201d<\/strong> more and more often\u2014especially in connection with electric vehicles.<br \/>\nAs someone whose work involves (ev) <strong>high voltage technology and related training<\/strong>, I\u2019ve been asked this question several times:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re the one who does those high-voltage training courses\u2014wasn&#8217;t that called &#8216;high voltage&#8217; back in the day?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The short answer is: <strong>No.<\/strong><br \/>\nBut since that alone is hardly satisfying, here&#8217;s a slightly longer\u2014and hopefully clearer\u2014explanation.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Two Terms\u2014Two Worlds: (ev) high voltage and high voltage<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>&#8220;High voltage&#8221;<\/strong> is a term from classical electrical engineering, as defined in <strong>VDE standards<\/strong> for decades.<br \/>\nHere, a distinction is made between various voltage levels:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Low voltage:<\/strong> up to 50 V AC or 120 V DC<\/li>\n<li><strong>Low voltage:<\/strong> up to 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC<\/li>\n<li><strong>Medium voltage:<\/strong> up to about 52 kV<\/li>\n<li><strong>High voltage:<\/strong> usually 110 kV<\/li>\n<li><strong>Highest voltage:<\/strong> 220 kV, 380 kV, or 400 kV<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ultra-high voltage:<\/strong> e.g., 1,200 kV (not common in Europe)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Strictly speaking, extra-low voltage is a subset of low voltage, but it is referred to separately for the sake of clarity; and everything above low voltage constitutes the general high-voltage category according to VDE 0101.<\/p>\n<p>(ev) <strong>high voltage<\/strong>, on the other hand, comes <strong>from the field of automotive engineering<\/strong>. The term describes the voltage range of <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>over 30 V up to 1,000 V for alternating current (AC)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Over 60 V up to 1,500 V for direct current (DC)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This means that (ev) high voltage actually falls <strong>within the low-voltage range<\/strong> \u2014even though that may sound counterintuitive to many people.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why \u201clow voltage\u201d is dangerous, even though the term may seem harmless to the lay person<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The term \u201clow voltage\u201d sounds harmless\u2014but it certainly isn\u2019t.<br \/>\nEverything that uses electricity\u2014whether at home, in the office, or in the workshop\u2014falls into this category. And:<br \/>\n<strong>Even 230 volts can be deadly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anything up to 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC is, in effect, low voltage! The <strong>Low-Voltage Directive<\/strong> is therefore one of the most important European safety directives of all.<br \/>\nAnd anyone who works with high-voltage systems is operating right in the middle of this range, usually well above the low voltage from a wall outlet\u2014 <strong>far from harmless.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<h3><strong>What &#8220;(ev) high voltage&#8221; Really Means<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Today, \u201cev\u201d <strong>high voltage<\/strong> has come to symbolize electric powertrains in vehicles\u2014and the special care they require.<br \/>\nTypical voltages are <strong>400 V or 800 V<\/strong>.<br \/>\nBy comparison, a car\u2019s electrical system operates at <strong>12 V or 24 V<\/strong>, while modern systems sometimes run at <strong>48 V<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This also explains why the term <strong>\u201clow voltage\u201d<\/strong> would be inappropriate in the automotive context:<br \/>\nIt falsely gives the impression that it is \u201charmless.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;(ev) high voltage,&#8221;<\/strong> on the other hand, rightly indicates that <em>special expertise is required here.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Safety Through Qualifications<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Working with high-voltage systems requires not only technical knowledge but also <strong>qualifications mandated by law<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThese include, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Certified Specialist for High-Voltage Systems in SHV<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Expert in High-Voltage Systems for Battery Technology<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>High-Voltage Systems Electrical Specialist<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>LLW on high-voltage batteries<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These training courses, based on DGUV I 209-093, provide the knowledge needed to safely test, maintain, or dismantle systems with (ev) high voltage.<br \/>\n(ev) high voltage can be very dangerous\u2014especially in battery technology, where high power levels can lead to electrical arcs.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>FAQ: (ev) high voltage vs. High Voltage<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Which is more dangerous\u2014(ev) high voltage or high current?<\/strong><br \/>\nBoth can be life-threatening. High voltage (100 kV and above) primarily affects power distribution networks. (ev) high voltage (up to 1,000 V AC) is below that threshold but is still potentially lethal in the automotive sector.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there (ev) high voltage in the home?<\/strong><br \/>\nNo. In the home, we&#8217;re dealing with low voltage (230 V). (ev) high voltage is found in electric vehicles and industrial HV systems.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is it called \u201c(ev) high voltage\u201d and not \u201chigh potential\u201d?<\/strong><br \/>\nBecause the term originates from automotive engineering and was deliberately distinguished from traditional power engineering. &#8220;(ev) high voltage&#8221; refers to the low-voltage range relevant to vehicles, up to 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Do I need training to work with (ev) high voltage?<\/strong><br \/>\nYes. Depending on the job, training in accordance with <strong>DGUV Information 209-093<\/strong> or other qualifications is mandatory. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it safe to touch components with (ev) high voltage when the system is turned off?<\/strong><br \/>\nOnly if you are certain that it is de-energized\u2014and have received the appropriate training. (ev) high voltage components can store residual energy. <\/p>\n<h3><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Hochvolt&#8221;<\/strong> is not the same as <strong>&#8220;Hochspannung&#8221;<\/strong> \u2014and this is not merely a linguistic difference.<br \/>\nWhile &#8220;Hochspannung&#8221; refers to high voltage in power grids, &#8220;(ev) high voltage&#8221; refers to the <strong>voltage range of modern electric vehicles<\/strong>.<br \/>\nBoth areas are dangerous, but only one affects the day-to-day work of repair shops, developers, and technicians.<br \/>\nAnyone working in this field needs one thing above all else: <strong>the right qualifications.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anyone who works with high-voltage systems bears responsibility for the safety of people, the environment, and operations.
